Read on to find what the summer solstice means for you.
What is a solstice?
Equinoxes and solstices are extremely important points in the year. While some people may think that they’re just based in nature, it is always important that we as a species do not stand apart from nature—we coexist along with the Earth, the weather, the plants, the animals and the stars above.
Equinoxes and solstices represent the onset of a new season. The Spring and Autumn equinoxes mark turning points in the year, while the Summer and Winter solstices represent the longest and shortest days of the year.
When a solstice arrives, the Sun reaches its highest or lowest point relative to our celestial equator. Earth’s celestial equator is the imaginary circle that mirrors our actual equator.
Solstice means “the Sun stands still” because this is what appears to happen during a solstice from our perspective on Earth.
What is the Summer Solstice?
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice always announces the arrival of the warmest months of the year.
This is because at this point in time, the Sun seems to stand still at the northernmost point of the equator, also known as the Tropic of Cancer.
After this time, the Sun will slowly start its journey south once again.
The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year with the shortest night. The Summer Solstice always occurs on June 20, 21 or 22. Moving forward, the days will softly get shorter.

How does the Summer Solstice affect us spiritually?
Throughout time, our ancestors honored the Sun. At the Summer Solstice, people worldwide have created festivals and celebrations that focused upon living in abundance and extravagance as well as coming together as a community.
Ancient civilizations, such as those that created Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids, also used these landmarks to commemorate the Sun’s journey through the sky. Midsummer or Midsommar festivals were commonly attended in Europe—and are still even celebrated to this day.
Regardless of your spiritual beliefs or practices, the Summer Solstice gives you an opportunity to embrace culmination, achievement and victory.
It is a climax of a cycle of growth. We can stand within the light, share what we have with the world and honor who and what we are. It is important to embrace authenticity, confidence and enlightenment.
How does the Summer Solstice affect me in astrology?
When it comes to astrology, the Summer Solstice always marks the beginning of Cancer season. At this point in the year, we turn within to understand who we are, what we’ve built and where we’d still like to go.
We can use this energy to manifest our desires, especially those that come from the root of our soul and intuition. Cancer as a zodiac sign encourages us to build our homes and futures while honoring the journeys—and people—that came before.
By sharing what we’ve created with others, we can live on steady ground together as a tribe and family.
